Pretty much the same problem I ran into some months ago (see http://forum.springsource.org/showthread.php?t=69885). My solution was to use the old-fashioned way (your solution nr 1.). But I didn't really go into the whole WorkManagerTaskExecutor thingie, which you got working I see. I'll post a reference to this post on the Spring source forum. Interesting.
